Byron Grilled Portobello Mushroom and Goat’s Cheese Burger

Recently we headed to a branch of Byrons in the Strand area of London. They have two options for veggie burgers on the menu, so I opted for the “Grilled Portobello Mushroom and Goat’s Cheese Burger” served with “roasted red pepper, baby spinach, tomato, red onion and aioli” (taken from the menu). It’s a little disappointing that they don’t have a speciality veggie burger, or at least a few options. If they market themselves as a burger place, you might expect that they would provide alternatives. This is certainly the case in other burger joints that I’ve been to. read more

Recipe: Kale and Tahini Bean Burger

Having tried out the Mexican veggie burger recipe of my own devising previously, I wanted to try something new. This time I put together some ingredients which I thought may be helpful, and which are our favourites from the cupboard in terms of taste. It was more a case of experimenting than having something particular in mind. I have been working on plans for possibly the best veggie burger of all time, but that will wait until later! At the moment I’m trying to perfect the technique as well as working on flavours. The recipe made six burgers, although they were very generously sized. If you wanted them to fit neatly into the average burger bun, you could most likely halve them and make twelve. read more

The Big Easy – Spicy Black Bean Veggie Burger

The Big Easy in Covent Garden has an interesting look right from the entrance. A long corridor leads you into a bar area, where you can wait to be seated with a couple of drinks. The whole building feels a bit like a maze, with more seats around corners and a downstairs area too. The spicy black bean veggie burger is one of just a few vegetarian options. This is perhaps to be expected at a barbecue restaurant however! It costs £10.90, and is described in the menu as follows: “Avocado, Pickle and Chipotle Sour Cream”, “with fresh potato fries and ‘slaw and house pickles”. read more

Recipe: Mexican Veggie Burger with Coriander

After trying a couple of recipes recently, I decided to work on my own veggie burger recipe. Although the results weren’t perfect, I’m sharing the recipe and how it turned out here. I’ll also mention how I would change it in the future. If you decide to give it a try yourself or make any changes, let me know how it goes! I’d be interested to see if anyone could refine it a little and eliminate some of the issues that I experienced. read more

Mildred’s Burger of the Day

Mildred's Burger of the Day

This was something really exciting for me, because I’ve never been to a full vegetarian restaurant before. Mildred‘s serves vegetarian and vegan choices, and is quite busy normally as you can’t book a table in advance. It’s a little cramped inside, but we managed to get a table to ourselves, and the food was absolutely worth it. We were told to try turning up a little later as that would reduce the wait, and we did not queue for long. Looking at the menu was ridiculous. This is the first time I’ve been able to choose anything I want from a whole menu! I could barely decide. But, since I knew it would be something I could talk about here, I eventually went for the burger of the day. As it was a special occasion, I also started out with tortelloni as an appetiser. read more
