Recipe Review: Deliciously Ella Black Bean Burgers

This week we’re looking at a recipe from another blog! We love the Deliciously Ella cookbooks and have both the first one and Every Day sitting proudly on our shelf. Of course, whenever we see a veggie burger recipe we get excited, and we just have to try it. This recipe is for the black bean burgers, which can be found in Every Day.

Getting down to the facts right away, we did find that it was very floury when following the recipe to the letter. I would recommend tweaking it a little if you try it yourself to get the flour levels down. It’s also missing a little something. Maybe if there was some extra garlic or herbs and spices to add flavour, or even an egg to hold it all together, it would taste better. As it is, there’s just something not there.

The patties do hold their shape very well and cook well, which is fantastic. All too often you find a recipe where the burgers just fall apart when you try to cook them, but that isn’t the case here.

The flavours that do come across very strongly are tamari and lime. If you’re not a fan of those flavours, you absolutely won’t be a fan of the burgers, and that’s a fact. Overall they’re better than some cookbook recipes I have tried, but they serve more as a foundation for tweaking and creating your own flavour.

I’m not as big a fan of this second cookbook as I am of the first. I had seen this recipe before it was published in the book and I feel that there are a lot of very simple or samey recipes in this one. I’m probably still going to buy the next one at some point anyway, I have to admit!

ON THE VEGBURGE SCALE, I GIVE THIS…

TASTE – 3/10

PRICE – 8/10

REST OF EXPERIENCE – 7/10

  1. I like looking through cookbooks but do tend to modify the recipe to suit my taste.

  2. Oh these don’t sound up my alley at all, I can’t stand Black Beans, and don’t really like Tamari either. I have her first cookbook and I’ve barely used it – got too busy with Wedding planning to enjoy cooking properly and got lazy! I really need to pull it out again!
