Wetherspoons Mexican Burger

I quite often nip out to Wetherspoons when I want a quick, hot, and tasty meal that I don’t have to cook, largely for two reasons: the price, and the veggie burgers. I’ll be going over the main veggie burger itself in a different review, but in this case I’m looking at the Mexican burger, which can be eaten with a veggie patty rather than one of the meat based burgers. It is basically an upgrade on the veggie burger and as such is a bit more expensive, but comes with a lot more food and flavour to make up for it. The meal comes as part of a deal which means that you get the burger and all accompaniments, a plate of chips, and a drink of your choice, all included in the price.

The “Mexican” part of the burger comes from the fact that there are several things added to the inside of the bun which spice it up a bit – quite literally, in the case of some green chilli peppers. I normally have those taken off just because I don’t like things to be too spicy, but if you enjoy eating the Wetherspoons nachos then this burger will be right up your street. These are all nestled into some guacamole, again the same stuff from the nachos, and placed on top of a slice of cheese. Right on top of all of this you also get some onion rings: there are six which come with the order, so you normally have three in the bun and three left on your plate. Aside from this you have the normal veggie burger with one lettuce leaf, a tomato, and a few bits of red onion resting on the bottom of the bun. Again, I’ll take the tomato out before I eat it, due to personal preference. Not surprisingly, perhaps, the bun is then held together with a toothpick.

It’s difficult to eat the whole thing in one, so to be honest I normally take all but one of the onion rings out to make it more manageable. Then it’s possible to eat it with your hands, but you do have to watch out for the guacamole sliding out of the back when you’re not looking! The flavours of this burger are excellent, and the textures work well too: you have a smooth and soft seeded bread bun, next to the smooth cold and tangy guacamole, with the crispy onion ring, the crispy breadcrumbs and soft interior of the burger, the sharpness of the red onion, and finally the lettuce to round it all out. For extra punch I normally add a bit of mayonnaise to the bottom, on top of the salad.

This is definitely a very filling meal, and after polishing off the burger, the six onion rings, and the whole plate of chips, I’m normally full for the rest of the day, even if I eat it at lunch time. I can get away with just having a snack for tea, which makes this even better value for money than it seems! It’s worth noting that it is a much less healthy option than the plain veggie burger as you will be heaping the extra calories on, but if you want that bigger meal then it may be worth it. A quick note to the rest of the meal – the onion rings are beer battered and quite tasty, just what you would want from them, and the chips are one of my favourites to have out and about. They are very fluffy on the inside and are usually served hot enough to burn your mouth, so watch out for that!

I go deeper into the flavours of the burger itself when I review the plain option, so give that a read too. I have to say this is a very good meal, particularly considering the price (and the fact that Wetherspoons do not perhaps have a reputation for good food). Though I would normally stick with the plain version, it’s a very good veggie burger and one that would satisfy just about any appetite.

On the Vegburge scale, I give this…

Taste – 9/10

Price – 8/10

Rest of experience – 8/10
