After a long day filming a TV pilot recently, J and I were dropped back by the production company at an easy to reach location: the Vauxhall Inn, which just so happens to be a restaurant with a pretty good reputation. They also have a dedicated vegetarian section on the menu, which is more than enough to impress me – so we decided to skip the cooking and give it a go.
And boy, did we make a good choice! J had the vegetarian fish and chips, which involves deep-fried halloumi and is, yes, absolutely as delicious as it sounds. I can hardly believe such an amazing dish is on the menu at a place like this, but it is, and I was blown away. Of course, I opted for the burger, because after all… this is VegBurge! Here’s what the menu has to say:
“Red & black bean burger mixed with red peppers, sweetcorn and jalapeños with a Red Leicester & mozzarella centre. Coated with a gently spiced nacho crumb. Served in a brioche bun with chips, onion rings and a honey & chipotle dip. £8.49”.
First off, let’s handle that value. It’s pretty damn good. Throw in a drink and I was eating a huge portion for £10. For a very nice meal prepared well in lovely settings, that spells huge value to me. I upgraded to sweet potato fries, as anyone who has read this blog before will probably expect! Those were the normal pub fare and certainly very good, but that’s not what you’re reading this for.
The burger was gorgeous! The flavour has a smoky, spicy quality to it, perfect for the Mexican theme. It has a crispy coating which contrasts nicely against the soft beans which make up the filling. There are also plenty of vegetables in attendance, including green beans, sweetcorn, peppers, and kidney beans amongst the white beans. The highlight has to be the cheesy, gooey middle – though this does not last for long. Mine was towards the side of the burger rather than dead in the middle, but it was a nice surprise to discover it!
Overall, this was a really lovely meal – and I can see that I will be back again to try the other vegetarian dishes, which sound amazing too.
On the VegBurge scale, I give this…
Taste – 7/10
Price – 8/10
Rest of experience – 9/10
