We were out at a fashion event recently when the deadly Hunger Monster struck – no, honestly, it can be deadly when the two of us get our hangry moods on. Needless to say, there was only one thing for it: scramble for somewhere to eat, and fast. Enter Rehab, Hackney, which just sorted of happened to be right there when we needed it. It’s not often you stumble by accident into a vegan eatery right when you’re feeling peckish.
This week, we combined two things we really love to come up with a third thing which is equally, if not more, awesome. Pizza houmous is where we’re coming from today, and let me tell you, you are going to enjoy this one.
Let’s break this one down a little so you can understand the layers of what is going on here. First you have a pizza-inspired houmous dip which is baked and served in a bowl ready to eat. Then there’s the topping of cheese melted right over the top of the houmous. Finally, you have the homemade nachos covered in cheese, representing the crust and also serving as a scoop to eat all that lovely dip with.
This week is less of a recipe and more of a demo, as we picked up this Sharaf falafel mix at Vegan Summer Fest Brighton. We tried a sample at their stall and they were delicious, but we wanted to eat some vegan burgers for our lunch so we couldn’t buy the premade ones. We decided instead to pick up a couple of their mixes – this one, for falafels, and a burger mix which we will share soon.
We were invited down this past weekend to sample some veggie food and cocktails at Brick & Liquor, a relatively new venue in Tooting. It opened in October 2016 under the management of David Layton, who has 12 years of experience in running venues across London.
This time out we took a trip to Bill’s in Bluewater. I can’t count the number of times we have looked at the menu and then ended up somewhere else, so finally it was time to give it a try. Of course we just had to go for the halloumi burger, which is listed on the menu as follows:

This week we’re off to the British Grand Prix, so with five days of camping ahead, we started eating up all of our fresh food to get rid of it. As a result, there was nothing left to eat for lunch – which meant a trip to a local cafe was in order! The Bakehouse at 124 is relatively new to Tonbridge, but with bread and just about every other component of their food made in-house, they are definitely a special treat.
Recently, I spent some time in Budapest, and gathered plenty of information about where you can find the best vegetarian or vegan meals while you are there. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but is based on my own experiences – and I did a lot of research both beforehand and while we were there in order to find the best possible options throughout the week. There is a lot to cover here, so I will get started right away…
The Pitcher and Piano in Tunbridge Wells is local to me, so I’ve tried most of the vegetarian items on the menu – including, of course, their veggie burger. This happens to be a tomato, houmous, and sweetcorn burger, served with (according to the menu) goat’s cheese rarebit, tomato, lettuce, and Russian dressing. On the occasion I’ll be describing here, I also had pan fried halloumi and chilli oil, as well as a delicious milkshake. The burger on its own costs £8.50, and is served with chunky fries, as you can see below.
