The Spread Eagle

This week, we’re back (from our lengthy hiatus following the theft of my phone and all my notes!) with a review of The Spread Eagle. This vegan pub is something of a novelty, but we wanted to know whether the food matches up to that appeal.

It’s quite a small space inside, so you’ll be lucky to find a table – booking ahead is strongly recommended. They were able to squeeze us in, which was nothing short of a miracle to hear the waitress tell it. read more

This week we just felt like having breakfast for dinner. The rocket and chorizo hash is our take on a classic breakfast meal in the US, though I’m not sure it’s quite as popular over here! Don’t fret, readers, we haven’t gone barbarian on you – the chorizo is a Quorn product, as you are about to see.

This was a great recipe to make – I kind of ad libbed the whole thing but it worked out delicious, which is always fun. The peppery taste of the rocket goes so nicely against the spicy sausage chunks, and the potato really brings it all together. It turned out a tiny bit greasy, but I put that down to being a little overzealous with the oil – after making fritters (which you will see next week!) I think I was being too pour-happy!

It’s a very easy recipe to change up if you want some other flavours. Spinach is a classic choice for this meal and you could also try out other types of sausage – I reckon hot dogs would work nicely. A bit of garlic is essential to this one but you could experiment with other herbs and spices too – even bring a bit of sweetness in!
