This week we’ve got one of our favourite things to share with you: a new veggie burger recipe! This one is adapted from a cookbook simply titled “Vegetarian” which I’ve had since my student days but never really delved too much into. Before you get too excited, I’ll be bringing you the recipe and review on Wednesday – for now we’re just going to take a look at the tasty, tasty Vine!
By now, regular readers know that I am a huge fan of Mildred’s, so it’s probably no surprise that I returned in order to try yet another of their marvellous burgers. This one is the Polish Burger from the regular menu. It’s served in a focaccia bun with iceburg lettuce, mayonnaise, pickled cabbage and gherkin, and my favourite: vegan cheese! It’s a beetroot, white bean and dill burger, which sounds amazing even to start with.
I recently ate this veggie burger while out meeting friends to celebrate Christmas, and of course a great night was had. There was Baileys, good food, and good company, and what more could you wish for? The sweet potato and mozzarella burger, as described on the menu, is served “with peppers and soya beans served in a floured bap with seasoned chips, homemade coleslaw, and a salad garnish”.
This week we tried out the Sainsbury’s Smoky Mexican Bean Burger. This is something that sounds and looks quite generic, to be absolutely honest – how many Mexican bean burgers do you reckon I’ve eating in my life? It has got to be quite a high number, so something like this really has to stand out in order to impress me.
Here’s another burger from our French adventures! This time, it’s from the Berny Burger, a little fast food place serving burgers and pizza. You will find it in the small town of Berny Riviere, and more specifically, on the campsite of La Croix de Vieux Pont. This is an area where you can camp or rent a lodge, so it’s fairly popular for all kinds of holidaymakers. It’s quite open, so it seems that you could walk or drive down here even if you were not staying on site.
Recently we spent some time in France, with a week first in the Loire region. We stayed in a beautiful countryside cottage, which was absolute bliss – surrounded by the moos of cows and not much else, we were able to relax and enjoy home cooked food in the evenings. We also ventured out each day to explore the nearby regions, including some magnificent châteaux, some local towns, and a few other tourist spots. I then went on to stay at Berny-Riviere for another week while J returned home to work – one of the joys of being a freelancer is not having to worry about how much holiday time you’re taking!
So, as you know by now, we’ve just spent a week in the Loire region of France. A full write up of our non-burger exploits will be coming soon (edit: here), but for now, I wanted to introduce you to a great little burger place we found in Angers. This historic town has a bustling centre full of shops, bakeries, patisseries, and restaurants, including one called VF. This is in fact one of a pair, with the other to be found in Nantes.
So, the summer is almost over. There are maybe a few days of sunshine left to us, but as the nights draw in a little each week and the air gets colder, it’s easy to feel summer slipping away. Let’s go for a last hurrah of a summer barbecue – the kind that a vegetarian can enjoy!
