Mildred’s Dalston: Mexican beans and mock chicken

Mildred's Dalston

I recently went to take advantage of the opening offer at Mildred’s Dalston venue, their latest branch. With V in tow we happily searched for the restaurant, more than eager to see what we might try this time.

It turned out to be reasonably hard to find from a walking perspective, because it’s tucked round the back of the station in the middle of nowhere. Literally – the view out of the large floor-to-ceiling windows is simply a lot of concrete and a few miserable trees, which is a bit of a shame. It’s not yet clear why they would choose to have such feature windows facing such a dismal view, but perhaps there is redevelopment planned for the area soon. read more

Vine Recipe: Sweetcorn Loaded Nachos with Cheese Sauce

As you know by now, we love Mexican food here at VegBurge! That’s why we just had to try making this dish, which contains fantastic flavours with home cooking to create a much healthier version of a traditional recipe.

You start off by making your own nachos, which is one of our favourite things to do anyway – it’s so much healthier than the real thing and takes very little time to do. You can add your own seasoning, whatever you like, though this time we chose to use corn tortillas and leave them plain. They are tasty enough as they are! read more

Vine post: Loaded Mexican Muffins

This little recipe is so amazing, and I can’t tell you how much we loved eating it. We LOVE Mexican food anyway, so these Mexican muffins were definitely an idea we wanted to pursue. We had them for lunch, but you could easily make this a breakfast item or even serve it as part of a bigger meal at dinner. read more

Vine Post: Avocado and Bacon Potato Hash

This recipe is a brand new one to us in many ways – I’d never bothered to cook potato from scratch like this before, as it’s just not something that features in our diet very often. But since trying out this potato hash recipe for the first time, we’ve gone on to make it again just a few days later, proving that it’s a new firm favourite. It’s absolutely delicious, and really moreish. The dressing especially makes this all the more special, though be careful not to use too much as it can overwhelm the taste. read more

Simple Green Pesto Recipe

It’s fair to say I normally try to reserve my Wednesday posts for burgers, but this month called for something a little extra. We’re currently going through pesto month over on Vine and in our Monday posts, so what better way to mark the theme than to share with you my favourite pesto recipe? This one is close to our hearts for several reasons. First, I love to make it in a big batch every month or so, storing it in a mason jar to serve over spaghetti or pizza for the rest of the week. Secondly, it was one of the first Vine posts that we did that saw a big response. It surprised us with how many loops, comments, and likes it got, and it remains one of our most popular Vines even now. read more

This post marks the first in a new series: recipe adaptations! As well as bringing you recipes for delicious veggie burgers, I’ll also be bringing you adaptations of meat-based recipes going forwards. Recipe: Sweet Potato Burger Scones

My first idea with this recipe was simply to try and make a sweet potato burger from scratch. I’ve made a few burgers by now, I love sweet potatoes, and I had plenty of ingredients on hand. What could possibly go wrong? Well, a lot, as it turned out. Rather than burgers, I made something which had a very strange consistency. After eating the whole batch, we agreed that they were more closely related to scones, which was a little dent in my cooking ego. Though they were delicious, I have thus far refused to make them again, due to J’s constant insistence that he “would like to have those scones again”. Here’s how I made them. read more

Recipe: Kale and Tahini Bean Burger

Having tried out the Mexican veggie burger recipe of my own devising previously, I wanted to try something new. This time I put together some ingredients which I thought may be helpful, and which are our favourites from the cupboard in terms of taste. It was more a case of experimenting than having something particular in mind. I have been working on plans for possibly the best veggie burger of all time, but that will wait until later! At the moment I’m trying to perfect the technique as well as working on flavours. The recipe made six burgers, although they were very generously sized. If you wanted them to fit neatly into the average burger bun, you could most likely halve them and make twelve. read more

The Big Easy – Spicy Black Bean Veggie Burger

The Big Easy in Covent Garden has an interesting look right from the entrance. A long corridor leads you into a bar area, where you can wait to be seated with a couple of drinks. The whole building feels a bit like a maze, with more seats around corners and a downstairs area too. The spicy black bean veggie burger is one of just a few vegetarian options. This is perhaps to be expected at a barbecue restaurant however! It costs £10.90, and is described in the menu as follows: “Avocado, Pickle and Chipotle Sour Cream”, “with fresh potato fries and ‘slaw and house pickles”. read more

Gourmet Burger Kitchen Californian

The Gourmet Burger Kitchen has been on my wishlist ever since I started this blog, and we had the chance to try it out recently. I went for the Californian, which costs £8.75 and is described on the menu as follows: “Homemade & pan-fried bean patty, mature cheddar, avocado, smoked chilli mayo, crispy onions, relish, salad.” I also went for the sweet potato fries, and shared a side of onion rings. Along with this I ordered the peanut butter milkshake.
