Lady Luck Southwest Red Bean Burger

I’m excited to start telling you all about the Lady Luck, because it has rapidly become one of our favourite places to go. Despite the fact that it’s over an hour’s drive away from home, we’ve already been 3 times – and I even took my parents! This is our absolute favourite bar right now, and with a fantastic veggie and vegan menu, there’s nothing not to like.

Situated right on the high street in Canterbury, it’s pretty easy to find. Step inside and you find yourself in a rock and roll paradise. Bright red walls are lined with gig posters, stencilled band logos, vinyl discs, and flyers. The jukebox plays rock, metal, and alternative hits all night long. They even have live music on certain nights.

But above and beyond this, the menu is absolutely superb. They have a whole section for veggie burgers, and almost everything on the menu has a veggie option. They are catering for everyone, and it shows: every time we’ve been, the venue has been packed out, including on weeknights. The atmosphere, the menu, and the fact that the food tastes amazing makes this the place to be in Canterbury.

So, let’s get started with our first burger on the menu. This was the Southwest Red Bean burger, described as follows:

Our classic homemade lightly spiced bean burger. Served as standard in our homemade white rolls (vegan). Our Southwest bean burgers are homemade and vegan friendly!   £7.95

The price also includes chips and  a salad. Before all of that, we started with the nachos, which are pretty damn delicious. The cheese was great and really the only thing lacking was a bit of guacamole. I always need my avocado hit!

The chips and the salad are pretty standard, but there’s a hack here which makes them all the better: ask for the vegan garlic mayo. Everything is made 100% more awesome with this strong yet not overpowering mayo. It’s perfect and works with everything we tried.

Meanwhile, the homemade vegan buns are fantastic, not too floury and definitely satisfying. I challenge anyone to tell the difference between this and a standard non-vegan bread roll.

The burger had a very beany taste and texture, much as you might expect. There was also a slightly bready taste to it, interestingly enough. It was a little dry, but not so dry that it became difficult to eat. There was just a hint of sweetness and of spice, and it seems clear that there is a lot of seasoning going on here. I could pick out olive oil, onions, red beans, coriander, paprika, mushroom, and lentil flavours.

The burger had an even consistency and was not crumbly, making it easy to eat. The outer layer of the burger was very similar to the inside, giving it an even taste and texture. It’s a simple burger, but a very good one.

ON THE VEGBURGE SCALE, I GIVE THIS…

TASTE – 7/10

PRICE – 7/10

REST OF EXPERIENCE – 10/10
