We previously reviewed a burger at the Slug and Lettuce, but that venue in Tonbridge has since been renovated into The Gatehouse. Good news for us, because it seemed a lot livelier and had a better atmosphere when we visited to try their new burger!
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, however, as there are a lot of similarities between the two burgers. Here’s the description from The Gatehouse menu:
SWEET POTATO & MOZZARELLA BURGER (V) £8.25 With mixed peppers, garlic and coriander in a nut & breadcrumb coating. Our burgers are served in a soft glazed brioche bun, with beef tomato, mixed leaves, pickled red onion and our house burger sauce, plus chips and a garlic mayonnaise dip
We also ordered a starter of nachos, and a side of garlic pizza bread, to go along with the meal.
The nachos were pretty standard, no complaints there but also nothing spectacular to brag about. As for the bread, that was actually pretty delicious and suitably greasy. The chips that came with the burgers were pretty standard – it’s clear that this brand orders their supplies from a well-known, industry-leading foodservice company.
You could also add halloumi for a small extra fee, which we did, as you can see. Besides that, the burger was joined by a small amount of salad, including a stupidly thick slice of tomato. There was a crumbed shell to the sweet potato burger which has me quite suspicious. Everything I thought about the burger could be pretty much summed up by what I thought about the previous Slug and Lettuce burger, and I’m not convinced that there has been a change at all.
That being said, the sides were pretty nice, and the atmosphere has had a much-needed improvement. Last time we went it was deathly quiet, and this time it was full to the brim. Admittedly we went on different days of the week, but it was a huge change. The only criticism I could give is that the music is very loud, but that’s down to personal taste. It’s not like it prevented us from staying on for an extra couple of cocktails, either!
Overall, it was a good meal, and a good place to eat. I’m excited to go again on a weekday to see if it’s a little quieter and more manageable, and to try the other things on the menu.
