Battle of the Burgers: Best Sauce + Burger Combo

This week we’re launching a new feature on the blog: Battle of the Burgers! This is your chance to see who is the ultimate winner in the sauce and burger combo category out of all of the options we’ve tried before.

First up, round one!

ROUND ONE: Asda Beetroot and Root Vegetable Burger vs Asda Red Pepper and Chickpea Brazilian Grills

This was a tough category to start off with. First we have the beetroot burgers, which I confessed in my review I am very partial to.

Then there are the Brazilian grills, a very different kind of burger with a VERY different kind of taste.

My final verdict on these was that the grills were better off without the sauce, whereas the beetroot burgers were better with it. That’s a compelling argument for our winner, and the scores back it up. The grills scored 2 less points on taste, the same on price, and 2 less on the experience.

Final scores: Brazilian grills 15/30, beetroot burgers 20/30.

ROUND TWO: Asda Sweet Potato and Kale Nut Bakes vs Asda Mushroom and Spinach Polenta Bakes

I had a big problem with the mushroom bakes, which were mostly flavourless until the sauce was added.

On the other hand, there was a lot of texture and flavour going on in the sweet potato bakes, with plenty of layers.

My final verdict here was that the sauce was necessary for the mushroom bakes but shouldn’t have been; and it wasn’t necessary for the sweet potato bakes, though it perhaps should have been. It’s a bit of a dilemma! The sweet potato bakes squeezed ahead in all categories except for price, where they fell just behind.

Final scores: Mushroom bakes 16/30, sweet potato bakes 18/30.

ROUND THREE: Asda Beetroot and Root Vegetable Burger vs Asda Sweet Potato and Kale Nut Bakes

One thing that comes to mind as we look at our final round is that the burgers scoring the highest were always, but always, the ones where the sauce was a nice accompaniment but not an essential one.

Though the category of burger and sauce combo might be a short-lived fad, we can make the most of it by choosing the ones that taste best overall. The only burger where the sauce not only helped, but was even delicious, was the beetroot burger. It’s clear that it has to be our winner today.

Final scores: Sweet potato bake 18/30, beetroot burgers 20/30.

So there we have it – the beetroot burger is our overall winner! Next time on Battle of the Burgers, we’ll be comparing fake meats on how well they blend in.
